The goshen stone crew

  • Founder

Gary, the founder of Goshen Stone, revived the family's stone quarrying legacy in 1991 after transitioning from a career in tree services. The quarry, situated on land that has been in Gary's family since the 1700s, has a rich history dating back to his great-great-grandfather, Hiram. Initially farming-focused, the family later utilized stone from the land for building and income.

Gary’s journey into quarrying was a decade-long process of learning through trial and error. He cleared the overgrown land, acquired equipment, and slowly built the business, which now spans 12 acres and employs a small team. Goshen Stone is renowned for its unique mica schist, a durable yet workable stone formed 420 million years ago.

Throughout his career, Gary has overseen memorable projects, including community contributions like stonework for local libraries and churches. Known for his dedication to quality and problem-solving, he attributes the company’s success to teamwork and adaptability. As Gary approaches retirement, he envisions passing the business to his trusted foreman, Matt, while remaining involved part-time. His hope is to preserve the family’s quarrying tradition and continue providing exceptional stone products for decades to come.

  • Foreman

Matt has been an integral part of Goshen Stone since 2001, beginning his career there as a splitter. Initially attracted to the job by the opportunity to work outdoors and operate equipment, Matt has progressed to the role of foreman during his time here. His responsibilities have evolved significantly, from splitting stone and working directly in blast sites to overseeing operations, assisting customers, and ensuring the smooth functioning of the business.

He takes pride in the company’s focus on quality, highlighting how Goshen Stone has transitioned from its early days of scrambling to meet demand to now offering carefully selected, top-quality stone. Matt believes that exceptional customer service sets the company apart, emphasizing a personalized approach regardless of the order size. His favorite interactions are with long-time customers, whose trust and loyalty he values deeply.

A native of Northampton, Matt grew up in the area and has lived nearby for most of his life. He enjoys helping customers envision and execute their projects, whether they are homeowners or contractors, and he finds particular satisfaction in seeing the creative uses of Goshen Stone showcased in stunning projects. Dedicated to his work, Matt envisions continuing to contribute to the company’s success.
